Looking for books-2001

2001
Australia's Ambivalence Towards Asia ISBN 967-942-458-8 J.V. D' Cruz & William Steele

Abstract
This is an account of the worldview underlying much of Anglo-Australian culture, of the difficulty it has had in understanding Asia and Asians, and in constructing a meaningful and durable relationship with Asian societies and cultures.
A critical piece of work, historically contextualised, and persuasively argued. It provides an analysis not only of Australia's ambivalence towards Asia, but also of the West's ambivalence towards the continent, the ex-colonies and towards people-of-colour generally. Inspired by the ideas of pioneering scholars of postcolonial writing such as Syed Hussein Alatas and Edward Said, this book has a stamp of its own, and is a welcome contribution to the corpus of postcolonial literature. Its exposition of the concrete abstract cultural continuum framework- a useful analytical tool for purposes of enhancing intercultural communication and conflict resolution- is worthy of further debate and elucidation.

J.V. D'CRUZ, currently teaches and researches in language and culture in the Department of Apllied Linguistic and Literature, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. WILLIAM STEELE, teaches and reseaches in the Department of Communication, Languages and Cultural Studies, Victoria University, Australia.
